Amanda Ellen Garrison

- May 31, 1992

Amanda Garrison called her mother Sunday night, May 31, 1992, from her boyfriend`s and said she`d be right home, to work on her resume.

By 11 p.m., when Garrison was an hour overdue, her mother began to worry.

Garrison , a 1992 UNC Charlotte graduate, was killed at 10:50 p.m. when
another car ran into her 1987 Chevy Cavalier at U.S. 21 and Hambright Road.

Mecklenburg police Sgt. David McAlexander said the other driver had been drinking and ran a stop sign.

Garrison , 21, was ``the kind of child you always wanted,`` said her father, Eddie Garrison . ``She had her head on right. You always knew where she was,
she was always doing the right things.`` Garrison earned degrees in criminal
justice and psychology in 3-1/2 years at UNCC while working a part-time job.
Then she enrolled in the paralegal program at Queens College.

``I figured when this paralegal was through, she would have said, Dad, I
want to go to law school,` `` said Eddie Garrison .

Amanda Garrison `s interest in the law started in high school when she
interviewed Charlotte lawyer Bart Shuster for a term paper, her father said.

She met Shuster through a friend at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church,
where she was an active member. That interview not only sparked her interest
in the law, but eventually led to a job with Shuster`s law office.

At Ranson Junior High, Garrison was homecoming queen and a member of the
National Honor Society. At North Mecklenburg, she was president of the French Club and a runner-up Miss North Mecklenburg in 1988. At UNCC, she was on the dean`s list.

``She always wanted to achieve,`` said Eddie Garrison . ``She had to work
hard. It didn`t come easy. She could have achieved anything. She had her life snatched from her.``

Born in Charlotte, she grew up in the Mallard Creek area. She left home to
stay in a dorm at UNCC for three semesters, then returned home, her father said.

Since high school, she`d dated her fiance, Jeff Hybarger.

In addition to her father, survivors include her mother, Donna Garrison ;
sister, Ms. Kimber Lee Garrison ; grandparents, Dewitt and Frances Todd Currie of Lake Wylie, S.C., C.J. and Mary Garrison .
