Megan Bevan
June 16,1958 - July 29, 2004
Megan Anne Bevan, 46, wife of Darryl J. Hatheway, of Mayesville, SC, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, SC, after an extended illness with cancer.
Born June 16, 1958, in Charlotte, she was a daughter of Louise Dabbs Bevan and the late John M. Bevan.
Upon graduating from Swarthmore College in 1980, Megan joined the staff of National Geographic, beginning as a writer-researcher in Educational Media and then in Educational Films. She came to National Geographic Television in 1984 as a senior scriptwriter for the newly launched National Geographic Explorer series and was quickly promoted to Associate Producer for Explorer's host studio shoots.
Known not only for her personal integrity, but also as an embodiment of the National Geographic institutional ethos, Megan was the logical choice to create, then direct Explorer's Research Department from 1986 to 1990. In 1991 she took over management of Explorer studio production, a complex job involving studio production between Washington, DC, and New York, directing a crew of directors, script writers, and set designers.
She was promoted to Vice President for all National Geographic broadcast and syndicated series which included numerous series domestically and extensive international distribution in a period of worldwide expansion for National Geographic Television. Megan became an integral part of the programming team that developed the schedule line-up for the launch of the National Geographic Channel, now one of the fastest growing cable channels in the U.S. market.
Besides her husband and mother, Megan is survived by two stepsons, Dylan and Nigel Hatheway and a stepdaughter, Colette Beers; two sisters, Brenda Bevan Remmes and her husband Bill of the Salem Black River Community; and Elizabeth Bevan and her husband Dan Clodfelter of Charlotte, NC; a brother, John Bevan, Jr., and his wife Kathryn of Great Falls, VA; and six nieces and nephews.
